The Pongidae comprise the orung-tan, the gorilla, and the two species of chimpanzee. Chimps and Gorillas are nearer to man than the orung-tan, and the chimps are undoubtedly the nearest to anthropoids to man in many respects. They are known to have remarkable intelligence with their behavior patterns and ability to use tools. In captivity, thay have been documented as being able to paint abstract paintings. They are found in Central Africa, in the western regions up to the great lakes in the Rift Valley. They live in various environments from humid rainforests to the open savannah. There are two known types of chimpanzee. The common pygmy or bonobo chimpanzee is smaller with a lack face and lives south of the Congo River Basin. Both species are in immediate danger of extinction.
