North America’s prairies are the most endangered ecosystems. In the year 2000, the black tailed prairie dog was put on a petition that ruled it be considered an endangered species. It habituates prairies of North America and lives in burrows and dens with families. They prefer open grasslands and prairies, but due to human expansion many were poisoned to make room for human capacity. They are starting to make a recovery since it was listed. They are small rodents that serve as a main food source for many types of species. The black footed ferret (which is in immediate danger of extinction), preys on the prairie dog and both are endangered.
